Education, Criticism and Preaching....
The first to start may not always be the finish, but the one that perseveres will meet you at the end. What people fail to realise is that they the is test based on those "few" subjects. And the grades obtained passing those few subjects are by no means relevant (though we're taught that it should be) in real life.
Remember that good grades in school by no means represent anything else other than good grades in school. True, you're judge by your grades but as to how relevant subjects like "Additional Maths and Geography" is in real life is open to debate.
The government is starting to realise that the education system is flawed and by no means guarantee anything other than the proficiency of those "few subjects" taught in school.
Nevertheless it's the only regconized path there is and condemning the system is not the solution.
Perhaps reinventing the system might help in better educating the future generation but that will be subjugated to a barrage of criticism from the oldbies and whether or not the system is well tailored to match most of the needs of the future generation is open to debate.
As many have known yet few have realised the reasoning behind past and present criticism of the education system is because most of it is based on knowledge. And knowledge is learnt and is by no means and accurate judge of intellect or other skills relevant to life.
Nevertheless a foundation regardless of the relevance(Oh, curse) is still a foundation. Whether or not it's flawed or relevant is no longer matters.
What matters now is the action taken by US to improve, educate and upgrade ourselves. Even better improve and invent a better system of change! You'll be remembered throughout history!
Back to the point, grades and tests aren't the only aspect of education. They are meant to "Grade and tests" the student and are by no means "the only aspect of education."
Why the government is pouring heavy investments in education?I see it as a means of upgrading the population to prepare them into "better" skilled workers. Singapore as you know consists of 683 sq km. In upgrading it's workers/population it's enabling itself to scale up the market thus equipping itself with the tools needed to compete in the global market. As it's unable to compete based on resources(oil, gold etc..),space or low cost skilled workers the only way is to move up the food chain.
In conclusion i'll quote:-
Most importantly, education can keep us within the global league of economic competitiveness and mitigate the chances of getting eliminated in the process of reforms and globalisation.
P.sThis highly competitive environment is by no means healthy if it's not chanelled through positively but it's a necessity that the government has come to realise that will they will regretfully(maybe not) weed out all of the weak at the expense of the "quality" and survivalbility.
